The Graded School Activity Center is a key component to a campus-wide master planning strategy that expands the school’s campus and better integrates it into the urban fabric of Sao Paulo. The purpose of the center is to centralize the public and private activities around a common space which also acts a gateway into the campus.
The activity center is located adjacent to the campus main entrance which would incorporate a large underground parking facility below the renovated soccer fields. All circulation into the campus would be through a vast plaza shaded by a large louvered and glass canopy. This canopy provides shelter from the elements but also acts as an outdoor events space for a wide range of activities including concerts, concessions, meetings and ceremonies.
The building adjacent to the plaza is the gymnasium and fitness center which also incorporates a visitors center, commons, meeting rooms and collaborative spaces. This building is designed as a living, breathing shelter or walled “pavilion” with a long-span structural system. Being free of a column grid this large space can be planned in a variety of ways so to adapt to the needs of the school over a long period of time.
